Workplace Culture
How the group communicates internally and with outsiders, how it accepts assignments, how it handles conflict and change, and how it handles stress all create the culture. Each member, including leadership, impact the group with their personality traits. Also crucial to workplace culture are the group’s “Why” and history.
Operational Structure
Structure is the way the group is set up to get the work prioritized and completed. This includes staffing, management, scheduling, and planning of the work, as well as how work is accepted and assigned. The success of an operation depends on the proper assignment of responsibility, calibrated to fully utilize team member’s skill set and passion.
Work Process
A process is the way, step by step, each work item gets done. Inconsistent processes produce inconsistent results. In order to create predictable, repeatable results, while being maximally efficient, organizations need to operate based on standardized operating procedures. Standardizing an operation allows for maintenance and updating of the process when needed, the smooth integration of new team members, and effective performance analysis to allow for ongoing improvement.
Utilizing Systems
Systems are the tools used to get work done and track the work. Teams need to be equipped with the most suitable technology for their responsibilities, which requires leadership to keep up to date with technological trends. Workers also need to be highly proficient in system utilization, which requires ongoing training and support as technologies change. Optimizing systems utilization can have a dramatic effect on performance and efficiency.
External Forces
These are factors which are out of the group’s direct control, including other work groups, customer education, perception, political factors and emergent issues. These factors can be navigated and mitigated through relationship building, education and careful planning.
Performance Measurement
This is the counting and tracking of important accomplishments of the group. Leadership must track and analyze team performance to ensure the team’s purpose and goals are being met correctly and efficiently. “Soft” measurements of customer and employee satisfaction must be included in the measurements to monitor and optimize for workplace health.
