4 Weaknesses That Can Derail Any Good Leader

As humans, we know and understand that we are not perfect. Acknowledging this fact and digging into our specific weaknesses is something most of us avoid, but to be a good leader, you need to know and understand your weaknesses.

No one likes to sit down and think about all the ways they fall short. However, in order to grow, develop, and progress as leaders we need to get uncomfortable and sit with our weaknesses so we can take proactive steps to counteract them.

“Growth begins when we begin to accept our own weakness.” – Jean Vanier

In particular, there are 4 Weakness That Can Derail Any Good Leader, so let’s dig into them so we can tap into that growth we need to have as leaders:

Ego – The word ego originates from Latin and when translated into English, literally means ‘I’. In regards to leadership, if you are solely focused on ‘I’ instead of ‘we’ or ‘team’ you won’t get very far. You need to have the humility to set aside your ego in order to be a good leader.

Failing to get Permission to Lead – This is one area that leaders can miss the mark on. Just because you were hired into the job, doesn’t mean that you have permission to lead. How can you obtain this permission? You need to get your team’s “buy-in”. You need them to get behind your vision and fully support your leadership because they trust you. You need to earn it.

Lacking Communication – As a leader, you most likely have a vision for where you’re headed and what you expect from your team. What happens though, if you fail to effectively communicate that vision? Frustration, confusion, and lack of motivation will creep into your team. Learn about your own communication style, as well as the communication styles of your employees. This will allow you to clearly share your vision with others and then continue engaging with them to make it happen.

Not Caring – You cannot fake caring! If you try, your team will see right through it. Distrust will start to form, and rather than helping you, your team will run from you. Prove through your words AND actions that you truly care about your employees. Get to know them and their families. If they know that you care, they will do anything for you and in turn your business or company.

If you have identified with any of these weaknesses, don’t be discouraged! Instead, be curious, be open, and willing to step up and do the work. You will benefit both yourself and all those you have the privilege of leading. Need help? Reach out. We are just a phone call, email, DM or chat away.
